Apply here for the 2024-25 Brown Bag series. The deadline to apply for this year's cohort is September 15th, 2024.
Our PhD Brown Bags are for students who are either currently engaged in or looking to begin theoretical modeling (such as computer simulations or closed-form mathematical models) of organizational phenomena. This includes students who are considering this as a part of their dissertation.
These informal discussion groups were born out of a recognition that students struggle to find insightful feedback, collaborative peers, and resources for such specialized work. In addition to peer learning and feedback, these informal discussion groups offer an opportunity to interact with faculty members of the TOM Society. Each self-managed group of 5-6 students meets virtually once a month throughout the academic year. Students have an opportunity to present their work - from early-stage ideas to finalized drafts - to their peers, and can choose to invite TOM faculty for feedback on research presentations or to share professional experiences and advice.
Discussion group format:
Students are matched into a fixed group of 5-6 members who share common research interests.
Groups are self-managed after initial setup (a group coordinator is nominated during the kick-off meeting).
Groups meet once per month throughout the academic year, starting in September.
Members commit to attending all of their group’s monthly meetings to provide each other feedback and to learn from each other.
Each student leads at least one (up to two, if desired) meeting per year. Students may choose to present an original idea or project, or to lead a discussion on recent developments in relevant research areas.
Students may invite TOM faculty to the sessions that they lead (the Organizing Committee will facilitate this). They may also choose to hold a closed meeting with their group members, or to invite students from other groups in the Brown Bag series.
Interested students with questions about this program may reach out to the Organizing Committee (tom.phd.info@gmail.com). We also invite interested students to connect with the Brown Bag community through our Google Groups Forum, or by sending a message to the TOM student listserve: tom-phd-students@googlegroups.com.
